Both videos are really interesting as they give different
perspectives on how to solve the scarcity of resources problem. But neither of the two solutions is better that
the other as they both have positive and negative sides. However, both
ideas complement each other.
Gilding focuses on the effects of growth and states that
controlling growth would be the key for solving scarcity. Nevertheless, I
seriously question our ability to maintain our current economic policy
of continuous growth and not hit major environmental, monetary or
governmental problems. On the other hand, Diamandis focuses on
technology and states that abundance is our future. Still, I think that
we would not be able to invent our way out of the crisis on time. Since,
an individual simply is not going to be able to do the vastly complex
science and design on their own as it requires huge budgets and
immensely expensive equipment.
But if both ideas come together, they may form the perfect
solution for the scarcity problem. Thus, controlling the source of the
problem (growth) and creating and implementing technological solutions
for the problem would definitely be the best option.
